Purpose
To tell the readers what happened in the past through a sequence of events.
Generic Structures
- Orientation (who were involved in the story, when and where)
- Event (tell what happened in a chronological order)
- Evaluation (comments of the writer / speaker about the experience)
- Reorientation (the conclusion of the experience, optional)
Language Features
- The use of nouns and pronouns (David, we, his)
- The use of action verbs (went, spent, played)
- The use of past tense (we went to the zoo last week)
- The use of time conjunctions ( and, but, after, finally)
- The use of adverbs and adverbs of phrases (in my house, two days ago, slowly, carefully)
- The use of adjectives (beautiful, sunny, old)
